I chose my own life.
About four years ago I got pregnant, just a few short months after being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. The pregnancy wasn’t planned but we decided to go through with it at first. Until we both got food poisoning, and what was just some upset stomach and vomiting for him turned into full blown Diabetic ketoacidosis for me.
I ended up in the emergency room, and being sent straight to an icu room, where I spent the next 9 days recovering and speaking to numerous doctors about my options. At this point I was only about 6 weeks pregnant, but my body was having a hard time adjusting to all the pregnancy hormones and keeping my blood sugar in range. I had to make the biggest decision of my life.
On one hand there was a chance that everything would be fine, but they also gave me a list of complications. I took a good long hard look at my boys and decided that they still need their mom, and I would do anything to be here for as long as possible for them. I chose my own life, and I am so grateful that I was given that choice. I sometimes wonder what could have been and what our child would have looked like or been like. But then I see my boys growing, experiencing new milestones and achieving goals they set out for themselves and I honestly couldn’t be more at peace with my decision.
